What is a fuss free, seamless way to read a textbook on a iPad and on a Mac?

I would like to annotate / highlight text in the pdf textbooks . I am looking at either goodnotes ; iBooks or Devonthinktogo/devonthink 3

I felt that devonthink3 seems robust enough to search for text but having said that I feel that there is a lot of effort to work between the mobile/iPad app and on the Mac
